Catherine Zeffie Smallwood

Catherine Zeffie Smallwood, 91, of Grottoes passed away on September 27, 2026 at Blue Ridge Health and Rehab in Harrisonburg.

She was born August 22, 1935 in Bergton, VA to the late Jesse S. and Nannie Simons Dove.

Catherine was a member of the New Covenant Community Church in Weyers Cave. She was a self-employed housekeeper for many years.

On July 5, 1992, she married Charles Smallwood, who preceded her in death on November 30, 2015.

Surviving Catherine are her sisters, Aggie Martin, Betty Jennings, Beatrice Hall, Shirley Turner, Evelyn Elliott, Mildred Dellinger, Barbara Wine; brothers, Charles Dove and J.R. Dove; numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Catherine was also preceded in death by her sisters, Ogretta Cook, Hazel See, Virginia Brightner, Edith Hammond and Agnes Martin.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at the Grandle Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private at Fellowship Community Cemetery. The casket will be closed.
