Obituary

Elizabeth Burwell Bird Neale Orebaugh, 91, of New Market passed away June 28, 2025 at Sunnyside Retirement Community near Harrisonburg.

She was born on January 20, 1934 in Mt. Jackson and was the daughter of the late Preston Michael Sigler "Jan" Bird, III and Jean Crawford Bird.

Burwell was a 1956 graduate of Madison College where she earned a B.S. in Business Administration.  She went on to retire after 28 years in the Shenandoah Co. Public Schools as a teacher at Stonewall Jackson High School.  She was a member of the Timberville Church of the Brethren where she served as a Deacon and in the church choir.  Elizabeth was an avid Bridge player, and in later years, a golf player.

On June 22, 1957 she married her first husband, Joseph Matthews Neale Jr. who preceded her in death on January 8, 1995.  On June 13, 1998 she married her second husband, Larry S. Orebaugh who preceded her in death on December 10, 2020.

Surviving are daughters, Anne Preston Neale, and her husband, RJ Morris, Jr, of Grottoes, Katherine Loudoun Deavers, and her boyfriend, Scott Bloom,  of Tampa, FL; a son, Joseph Matthews Neale III of New Market, two grandchildren, Taryn Rattenni and Collin Rattenni, with wife Bethany, all of FL, sisters, Judith Liskey of Winter Park, FL, Anne Dempsey and husband Connor of Wilson, NC; step children, Christine Orebaugh, Errol Orebaugh, Rhonda Orebaugh, and Catherine Jennings; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husbands she was preceded in death by a sister, Cynthia Bunn.

Pastor Karl Magenhoffer will conduct a memorial service, Thursday, July 10 at the Timberville Church of the Brethren, located at 145 Church St, in Timberville, VA, at 11:00am which will be livestreamed on the Church's Facebook page. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so on Wednesday, July 9, at Grandle Funeral Home from 6-7:30pm. Burial will be private.

Per her wishes her body was cremated.

Her family wishes to thank the folks with Gentiva Hospice Care, the staff at Sunnyside Retirement Community and her home health care nurse, Teresa, for all of the loving care and support during her final days. Words cannot describe how much you are appreciated!
