Elizabeth "Betty"
Sweitzer Moore
Apr 5, 1939 — May 3, 2022
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Elizabeth "Betty" Sweitzer Moore, at her residence in Marietta, GA on Tuesday, May 3, 2022. She was 83.
Betty was born Elizabeth Louise Sweitzer on April 05, 1939 in Shamokin, PA to parents, Matthew and Rose Sweitzer. She graduated from Mt. Carmel Catholic High School in Mt. Carmel, PA, and was the eldest of 3 children, followed by Matthew "Skip" Sweitzer and Margaret "Peggy" Sweitzer.
Upon graduation from high school, Betty, at the age of 16, was selected to work as an administrative assistant to a US Army Col at the Pentagon in Washington DC. This was one of the most exciting times of her life, and helped to develop her strong will and adventurous spirit. She thoroughly enjoyed her time at the Pentagon. After several years living in Washington DC, Betty returned to live with her mother and father to help them take care of her ailing grandmother.
While participating in a beauty contest at the Picatinny Arsenal, NJ, she was paired with a US Army officer, Theodore Philip Moore, for the evening ball. They married in 1963, in Washington, NJ, and enjoyed a very successful 55 year marriage! Over the next 8 years, the couple had 3 children, Ted Jr., Tim, and Jill. Betty was a devoted mother, who raised her three children with love, encouragement, and dedication. Her legacy includes 6 lovely grand-daughters to whom she embodied a selfless spirit, a never give up attitude, and a sassy sense of humor.
The family resided in several locations over the years, and during this time Betty developed a love for travel. Along with her family, she visited most every US National Park in the lower 48 US States. After she raised her children, Betty decided to return to school, earning an Associates degree in Business from Anne Arundel Community College in Severna Park, MD. She graduated with honors, having scored a straight A average in her coursework.
Betty is survived by her children Ted, Tim, and Jill and their families. In addition to her children she is mourned by her beautiful grandchildren, Libby, Sarah, Kirsten, Genna, Katie, and Nikki. She is also survived by her brother, Matt, and his wife Cindy. She is predeceased by her husband, Theodore Philip Moore Sr. and her sister Margaret Sweitzer.
Betty left the world surrounded by her loving children.
A Catholic burial will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 21st at Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, 155 E Lee St, New Market, VA 22844. Betty will be laid to rest next to her husband of 55 years, Theodore Moore Sr. In addition, a memorial mass will be held in her cherished childhood hometown of Mt. Carmel, PA, which she loved so much. Details for this service will be forthcoming.
If you are so inclined, a donation may be made in Betty's honor to the American Brain Foundation or flowers may be sent to: In Memory of Elizabeth Moore, Grandle Funeral Home 148 E Lee St, Broadway, VA 22815.
