Gilbert Elwood Layman, 89 of Rockingham died Sunday, September 7, at the home of his daughter, Janet Harrison of Stanley.

He was born February 15, 1936 and was the son of the late Jasper O. Layman & Bertha Mathias Layman Sager.

Gib farmed most of his life and retired from Dunham Bush after 32 years and was a member of the Pine Grove Church of the Brethren.

On April 2, 1955 he married Shirley Ann Ritter Layman who preceded him in death on February 13, 2021.

Also surviving are children: James "Mike" Layman, Rockingham; Janet Layman Harrison & husband EF Harrison, Jr of Stanley; Gregory E. Layman & wife Charley of Broadway; Arthur A. Layman & wife Tracey of Rockingham; Anita F. Layman & fiancé Francis Kimmel of Broadway; Douglas W. Layman & wife Teresa of Stuarts Draft. 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Gib is survived by one sister, Fleta Terry of Hampton.

Pastors Archie Webster, Linda Waggy, and Tim Conley will conduct a funeral service at 1:00 P.M. Thursday at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway, where the family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.  Burial will follow privately.

Those wishing to sign the book and pay respects may do so on Wednesday from 9 A.M. to 7 P.M. at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.
