Harry Emmett Long, born November 9, 1925 near Mt. Jackson, Virginia passed away November 29, 2023 at the age of 98.

He was the son of the late Homer Allen Long and Margaret Grace Barton Long. He was one of nine children who were Madelene Catharine Fleming, Hoyle Barton (H.B.) Long, John Benjamin Long, Louise Faulkner-Nairn, Clarence William (Jim) Long, Phyllis May Fravel-Hughes, Homer Allen Long, Jr., Harry Emmett Long and Wayne Linwood Long.

He graduated from Roanoke College on June 19, 1951 with a degree in business. While in college he was president of his fraternity Phi Kappa Phi and several other organizations.

On June 23, 1951 he married Virginia Lee (Jinx) Miller, who survives, daughter of Isaac Franklin (Frank) and Bessie Jones Miller of Timberville, Virginia. Harry and Jinx have been married for more than 72 years. Both are members of Reformation Lutheran Church in New Market. Also survived by his son, Christopher Emmett Long and wife, Edy, their sons, Christopher Tyler Long, wife Rachel and their two daughters, Rebecca Grace and Chloe Elizabeth and Dillon Emmett Long, and wife, Elise.

He served his country twice, once during World War 2 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 441st Army Counter Intelligence Detachment during the occupation in Japan. His second tour of duty was with the 430th Army Counter Intelligence Corp. as a 1st Lieutenant, stationed in Salzburg, Austria during the Korean War. He was accompanied by his wife while in Salzburg.

Once Honorably Discharged he came back to the Shenandoah Valley and joined his Brothers in the Poultry Business. In 1966 he went on his own and built two poultry houses in Redbanks, Virginia then later building two more in Quicksburg, Virginia. He also served on the Board of Directors of Rockingham Poultry Marketing Cooperative for 17 years.

Harry also enjoyed real estate, land development and had a passion for history and genealogy. For 40 plus years he worked daily on genealogy, with a focus on the southern part of Shenandoah County. This passion lead him to many court houses on the East Coast. During his work, Harry found that surprisingly his distant cousin was none other than Davy Crockett, frontiersman, soldier and defender of the Alamo.

Harry was a man's man; successful businessman and wonderful friend, father and husband. Loved and respected by many who knew him in business and in his personal relationships, will be missed by those who knew him as a compassionate, yet brutally honest and direct man.

A memorial service will be held May 18, 2025 at 2:00 pm at Reformation Lutheran Church at New Market VA
