Janet "Joanie"
Marie Hanshaw
Oct 18, 1945 — May 24, 2025
Harrisonburg
Janet Marie "Joanie" Hanshaw (79) passed away on May 24, 2025, at RMH Sentara. She was born in Waynesboro, Virginia, on October 18, 1945. She lived in Lynchburg from 1947 until 1984, when she moved to Harrisonburg. There, she became a vital part of the Pleasant View family, living at Harrison Residence and Moyers Apartments. She was active in day supports and supported employment.
She was a beloved member of Trinity Presbyterian Church for more than 40 years, participating in a number of missions and projects. She volunteered in the Clothes Closet, was active in environmental work and recycling, joined a group praying for peace, supported mission trips to South Africa, volunteered with a church group working with Mercy House and Open Doors, helped with office work, and loved singing and celebrating in weekly worship and special events. She was also an active member of the Shenandoah Valley Faith and Light and the Pleasant View vocal and bell choir. She loved music, especially hymns and country music. She held a deep faith in God and lived her faith in everyday life.
Joanie enjoyed contributing to her community through her work and volunteering. She worked at the Craft House for a number of years. She also worked as one of the housekeepers at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation and for Pleasant View. In addition to her volunteering through her church, she helped with Meals on Wheels, at various childcare centers, at Ridgeway Mennonite Church, and helping the Backpack food program. She endured many physical challenges throughout her life, but did so with patience and good spirits, using her own experiences to become an advocate for others.
Joanie was an amazing friend. She was warm and loving. People she met became her friends for life. She sent birthday cards, get well wishes, and other greetings to members of her church and all her friends, and remembered everyone's family members by name. She had a wicked sense of humor and loved playing jokes on those she loved. She became extended family to many who worked with her through the years. She loved making latch hook pictures as presents.
The Pleasant View community would like to offer special thanks to Harvey, Nancy, Dr. Gehman, Debbie, Carol, and Cricket for the extra support they offered to Joanie at various times in her life.
She will be deeply missed by her Pleasant View family, Trinity church family, and all those who had the joy to know her. A service to celebrate her life will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church in the coming week. Please contact Pleasant View for additional details. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent to Pleasant View, Inc. P. O. Box 426, Broadway, VA 22815.
