Joseph F. Tusing II, 81, of New Market, VA passed away March 5, 2026. Joe was born in New Market, the son of Henry Immel Tusing and Elizabeth (Bessie) Wise Tusing. During his youth, Joe worked for his father's grocery store, Midway Market, and served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1967. After his service, he became a professional firefighter for Arlington County, VA for 15 years. At his retirement, he returned to live in his childhood home in New Market, VA. Joe was a good friend to all and never knew a stranger. He talked to anyone, anywhere and was known as a storyteller, whether it was delivering a joke or a history lesson.

Joe is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Meadows Tusing of Harrisonburg, VA, his daughter, Gretchen (Brad) Tusing Hendricks of McLean, VA, his granddaughter, Zoe Elizabeth Hendricks of McLean, VA, his sister, Judith Tusing Pattee of Winchester, VA and two nieces, Amy Pattee (Ben Florin), and Ellie (Kevin) Esmond and son Paul. He is also survived by his beloved cat, Henkel.

Joe was proceeded in death by his younger sister, Elizabeth Ann (Tusing) Dart and his parents Henry and Bessie. Joe's mother instilled in him a love of history, especially the history of the Henkel family. Joe devoted many years to caring for the Henkel House in New Market, VA, and gave guided tours to both locals and tourists.

The family extends their gratitude to the caregivers that supported us throughout Joe's illness. Even to his final days, Joe maintained his sense of humor.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 14th from 3-5 p.m. at Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway, VA and a memorial service celebrating Joe's life on Sunday, March 15th at 3 p.m. at Reformation Lutheran Church in New Market, VA. A graveside service with military honors will follow at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in New Market, VA with a reception back at Reformation Lutheran.
