Margaret Rose Flesher Wittig Whitmore of the Bridgewater Home, formerly of Broadway, VA, died on February 6, 2026. She was born on July 26, 1938 at McDowell, VA, daughter of the late George William and Grace Chew Flesher.
Margaret was a graduate of Middle River High School, Weyers Cave, VA and Rockingham Memorial School of Nursing, Harrisonburg, VA.
In 1958 she married Orvan R. Wittig who died on September 5, 1991. In 2000 she married M. Raymond Whitmore who preceded her in death on July 23, 2015. Also preceding her in death in 2021 was her only sibling, Edwin P. Flesher, Sr.
Margaret was employed at Rockingham Memorial Hospital (now Sentara RMH) for 32 years where she held many nursing positions and was active in nursing organizations pertaining to whatever specialty she was working in at that time. She was later employed in a pharmacy for 8 years before retiring. Margaret maintained a working relationship in an "as needed" position for the education department at Rockingham Memorial Hospital for many years. She served on the American Cancer Society Board where she was active in the Reach to Recovery Program, the Community Services Board and worked with Continuing Services.
Survivors include her sister-in-law, Ann H. Flesher; nieces, Victoria "Vicki" Hodges (Tim); Jane Ann Franklin (Bob); and nephews, Edwin P. Flesher, Jr. (Kimberley) and Eddie Wittig (Cheryl). Two stepchildren, Alice Ann Whitmore Blevins (Kirby) and Vince Whitmore (Robin) also survive.
Margaret had many four-footed companions, Tinker, Becky, Penny, Millie, Maggie, Lily and Mistie.
At her request, Margaret will be cremated with inurnment at Bergton Martin Luther Lutheran Church Cemetery. There will be no visitation or services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your local SPCA or a charity of your choice. Grandle Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
