Obituary

Martha Jane Brady, 91, of Broadway, VA and formerly of Criders, passed away February 12, 2023 surrounded by her family.

Martha was born October 26, 1931, on top of Shenandoah Mountain in Pendleton County, WV, and was the daughter of the late William W. and Vernie N. Siever Turner.

She was employed by H.D. Lee Company for 3 years, National Fruit Company for 5 years, and retired from Rockingham Poultry after 24 years.  She was a member of Damascus Church of the Brethren in Criders.

In addition to bringing up five kids, Martha was especially fond of her many cats, and during the springtime there was always an orphaned lamb or two that she would lovingly bottle feed. She grew a heck of a good garden and canned as much as she could for the winter months. Perhaps she was most famous for her home baked bread - folks made a point from miles around of stopping by on baking day! More recently, you may have noticed her monthly crossword puzzle entries in the Chimney Rock Chronicle. She loved working those puzzles. Martha was lovingly cared for by her daughters in her last years. She always knew just how much she was loved, by her family, extended family, and those of you in this wonderful community.

Martha married John R. Brady on May 15, 1948, who preceded her in death September 7, 2017, after 69 years of marriage.

Surviving is one son, Wayne (Betsy) Brady of Lake Monticello, VA; four daughters, Bonnie Dove of Broadway, Joyce (Robert) Hannum of Rockingham, Wilma Brady of Broadway, Tina Shoemaker of Broadway; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.

Martha was preceded in death by her brother, Adam Turner; sisters, Bertha Haviland Shank, Nellie Secrist, Catherine Turner Campbell, Hazel Woods; and son-in-law, Merle Dove.

Pastor Larry Aikens, Pastor Glen Turner and Dennis Lantz will conduct a funeral service 2:00 PM Friday at Damascus Church of the Brethren.  Interment will follow at Caplinger Cemetery in Criders.

The family will receive friends from 6- 8 PM Thursday at Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway. Friends may visit Grandle Funeral Home anytime after 9 AM Thursday.

A special thanks to Grandle Funeral Home, First Choice Home Health Nurses, P.T., Hospice,  Sentara Physicians, family and special friend Cathy Slifer, for all their care, support, and acts of kindness.
