Millard Wayne Pence, 76, of Singers Glen, VA passed away Thursday, September 28, 2023 at home surrounded by his loved ones.

He was born on January 14, 1947, and was the son of the late William A. and Helen Carr Pence.

He served in the U.S. Army in North Korea from 1968-1969.  He worked at Dunham-Bush until its closure, and then worked as a custodian at Wilbur Pence Middle School until his retirement in 2012.  Millard was a member of Mt. Olivet Church of the Brethren in Timberville, and the VFW Post Chimney Rock.

Millard loved to fish, hunt, play BINGO, go on Sunday drives, watch The Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune.  In the summer he would put out a large garden and furnish family, friends, and the neighborhood with fresh vegetables.  He also loved to can vegetables from his garden.  Millard loved to joke with everyone he knew, and would help others any way he could.

Millard is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Funkhouser Pence, who were united in marriage on June 30, 1973.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, Eric Pence and wife Nichole of Bristow, VA; his daughter, Lisa Chappell and companion Joseph Pryce and son Landon of Singers Glen; sisters, Anna Reedy of Broadway, Naomi Bowman of Harrisonburg; grandchildren, Rebecca Pence, Jacob Pence, Jackson Pence; step-grandchildren, Caroline and Nicholas Buchanan; numerous nieces and nephews; his fur babies, Keanna, Oscar, and Sassy; and grand pups, Diesel, Dixie, and Shadow.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Catherine Shifflett; and four brothers, Roger Pence, Floyd Pence, Beverly Pence, and Harold Pence.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 3rd from 6 – 8 PM at Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.  The body was cremated, and there will be no open casket.
