Vincent Morton Whitmore, 71, originally of Broadway, Virginia, died on May 10, 2026 after a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer. Most of all, Vince will be remembered by his family and friends for his patience, kindness, and gentle spirit.

At age 16, Vince was a charter member of the Broadway Emergency Junior Squad, and served as Captain. He became a senior member when he was 18 years old, and continued to be a member of the Broadway Volunteer Fire Department until 1977.  Vince began his career with the City of Alexandria Fire Department that year, and rose to the rank of Assistant Fire Chief before retiring in 2008. He served as a first responder at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, and continued to be a presence in emergency management in Northern Virginia throughout his retirement as he consulted on various projects with the federal government.

Surviving family includes his wife, Robin Whitmore, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, as well as his son, Colin Whitmore and wife Emily, of Reston, Virginia, and daughter, Lauren Whitmore, of Richmond, Virginia. He is also survived by four stepchildren: Adam Goble and wife Kathy of Bridgewater, Virginia, and Elizabeth Goble, of Bridgewater, Virginia, as well as Chris Vogelsang and wife Jenny of Fishers, Indiana and Jeff Vogelsang and wife Johanne of New York, New York. Vince was adored by two grandchildren: Amelia Whitmore of Reston, Virginia, and Chandler Thompson, of Richmond Virginia, as well as four step grandchildren, Aedan Goble and Emma Goble, both of Bridgewater, Virginia, and Annie and Hudson Vogelsang, of Fishers, Indiana. He is also survived by his sister, Alice Ann Blevins and husband Kirby of Martinsville, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Morton Raymond "Beck" Whitmore and Winifred Clower Whitmore, as well as his brother, Greg Whitmore.

Graveside services will be private, and a celebration of life will be held at the Broadway Fire Department on June 13, 2026 at noon.
